Snow-loss analysis for Nordic EYA
Albedo
Albedo quantifies the degree of reflection from the ground. Albedo is one of the parameters that can affect the production of solar power plants, especially power plants with bifacial solar cell modules, significantly. Albedo is therefore an essential parameter to assess in order to provide accurate production estimates from the solar power plants, particularly in Nordic locations where snow provides high reflection. The albedo varies throughout the year and is specific to each location. Norconsult calculates albedo based on local ground conditions and location-specific snow data, including frequency of snowfall, snowfall amount, and temperature fluctuations.
Soiling
Soiling refers to the accumulation of material, such as dust or snow, on solar panels, which reduces energy production. In Nordic regions, snow is the dominant factor and must be accurately modeled. At Norconsult, we use the Marion model combined with long-term climate data and our proprietary numerical weather model (KVTMeso) to estimate monthly snow-related losses. This approach accounts for panel tilt, snow depth, temperature, and irradiance, providing reliable insights for system performance and bankability
Reducing Uncertainty, Improving Profitability
Climate data along with accurate snow loss parameters is directly linked to energy generation which is key to a project’s financial performance. By applying site-adapted snow loss parameters uncertainty in the EYA estimates and project profitability are reduced.
