Bridges

There are several wind related aspects which affect bridges. At extremely high winds, a bridge will be subjected to large wind forces. In turbulent and strong wind or by steady winds of moderate strength, a bridge may oscillate. The various structures have different responses to these phenomena and good knowledge of the wind conditions may be of critical importance. The building phase and the finished state often have different requirements for the wind environment.

Knowledge of the wind climate at the bridge site may also be important for other reasons. Construction with high cranes cannot be done in periods with strong winds, and traffic over the bridge can be dangerous during such periods.

Kjeller Vindteknikk can perform measurement campaigns with tall masts to measure mean wind, gusts, turbulence and wind series with high frequency. KVT can also carry out analysis that includes calculation of extreme wind speed and frequency distribution of turbulent energy at the bridge site.
